What to visit in Niš: Must-see places and attractions

Niš is the largest city in southeastern Serbia and has always been at the crossroads between East and West.

Two Roman emperors, Constantine the Great and Constantius III, were born in this city, and it was here that Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja met with German Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1189. After the fall of Belgrade during World War I, Niš became the temporary capital of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Today, Niš is the third-largest city in Serbia and the center of all events in southern Serbia. The rich history of Niš is visible at every step as soon as visitors arrive in the city.

Niš fortress

The Niš fortress was built by Turkish conquerors on the remains of ancient and medieval fortifications. Although it is under state protection, it is open to all visitors today.

It is a favorite place for parents with small children who stroll along the fortress paths or ride the tourist train, as well as for the elderly who spend time chatting in the cafes. The stairs lead to the top of the main gate, where you can enjoy the view of this beautiful city.

Summer villa of Roman emperor Constantine the Great

The first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity was Constantine the Great, who was born in Niš. With the Edict of Milan in 313, he proclaimed tolerance towards Christians in the Roman Empire. What remains today is Mediana, Constantine's vast summer villa, after which the central part of the city is named.

The grim past of the Crveni Krst Nazi concentration camp

The Crveni Krst concentration camp is one of the few Nazi camps that has remained completely intact. During the Nazi occupation of Serbia in World War II, Serbs, Jews, Roma, and communists were imprisoned here.

Lines carved into the walls by prisoners counting the days and floors covered with barbed wire are testimony to the horrors of Nazi terror.

Sit at the table with Stevan Sremac

Stevan Sremac is one of the most significant Serbian writers, and in Niš, a sculpture of him sitting at a table drinking rakija was erected. The table is set so that you can sit down and have a drink with Stevan Sremac, the famous Niš jeweler Kalča, and his dog.

Ćele tower

Ćele Kula (Tower) is a monument from the First Serbian Uprising, built from human skulls after the Turkish authorities' retaliation against Serbian soldiers killed in the Battle of Čegar. Today, only about 50 skulls remain, one of which, placed on a pedestal, is the head of one of the uprising leaders, Stevan Sinđelić, who heroically died in 1809 by firing his pistol into barrels of gunpowder, killing hundreds of Turks.
