Before World War II, Zvezdara was a suburb inhabited by Serbs, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, and Russians, and it was known for its lively and culturally diverse community. Tram line “6” connected residents with the city center.
The municipality celebrates its patron saint day on Sretenje Gospodnje (February 15), and Zvezdara Day is observed on October 16, commemorating its liberation in 1944.
Culture, green Spaces, and leasure
The Astronomical Observatory is a symbol of the municipality and the only one of its kind in Serbia. Veliki Vračar hill, now known as Zvezdara, is the highest point in Belgrade (248.6 m). Professor Milutin Milanković worked here.
Zvezdarska Šuma and Stepin Lug are large green oases. Zvezdarska Šuma (145 ha) was created after 1945 with tens of thousands of acacia, poplar, and maple trees, while Stepin Lug covers 8.5 km², with thirteen tree species and habitats for rabbits and pheasants. During World War II, Zvezdarska Šuma was used as a German artillery position.

Theatres and cultural institutions include Zvezdara Teatar, Pan Teatar, and the cultural institution Vuk Karadžić. The Church of St. Prince Lazar is an important architectural landmark.
