Location and main features

History of Zvezdara

The name Zvezdara comes from the Astronomical Observatory, built at the end of the 19th century on Veliki Vračar hill. The area was previously known as Veliki Vračar, with the first records dating back to the 16th century. Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra, the longest and oldest active street in Serbia, used to be called Carigradski drum and connected Singidunum with Constantinople.

Before World War II, Zvezdara was a suburb inhabited by Serbs, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, and Russians, and it was known for its lively and culturally diverse community. Tram line “6” connected residents with the city center.

The municipality celebrates its patron saint day on Sretenje Gospodnje (February 15), and Zvezdara Day is observed on October 16, commemorating its liberation in 1944.

Culture, green Spaces, and leasure

The Astronomical Observatory is a symbol of the municipality and the only one of its kind in Serbia. Veliki Vračar hill, now known as Zvezdara, is the highest point in Belgrade (248.6 m). Professor Milutin Milanković worked here.

Zvezdarska Šuma and Stepin Lug are large green oases. Zvezdarska Šuma (145 ha) was created after 1945 with tens of thousands of acacia, poplar, and maple trees, while Stepin Lug covers 8.5 km², with thirteen tree species and habitats for rabbits and pheasants. During World War II, Zvezdarska Šuma was used as a German artillery position.

Parks such as Park kod Vuka and Park Slavujev Potok provide green areas in the city center, ideal for gatherings and walks with pets. Slavujev Potok even has an internet park popular among young people.

Zvezdara is well connected to the city center and other parts of Belgrade via trams (2, 5, 6, 7, 12, 14), trolleybuses (28, 40, 40L), and buses (20, 25, 25P, 27, 27E, 46, 74, 79). BG:VOZ lines 1 and 4 allow faster transport.

Education and culture

Zvezdara has 14 primary schools, 9 secondary schools, and about 30 kindergartens and nurseries. Faculties near Vukov Spomenik include Electrical, Mechanical, Architecture and Civil Engineering, as well as the Belgrade Academy of Business and Arts and Belgrade Polytechnic.

Theatres and cultural institutions include Zvezdara Teatar, Pan Teatar, and the cultural institution Vuk Karadžić. The Church of St. Prince Lazar is an important architectural landmark.

Sports

The main sports center is SC Olimp, with pools, athletic tracks, and courts for basketball, football, handball, and volleyball. Tennis courts donated by Novak Djokovic are also part of the complex.

Shopping and Entertainment

Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra is the center for shopping and restaurants, with artisan shops, cafes, boutiques, and diverse stores. Larger shopping centers are Aviv Park and BEO Shopping Center, offering a wide range of international brands.

Zvezdara also hosts numerous restaurants and taverns. The iconic Pavle Korčagin tavern reflects the spirit of old Belgrade, while Tabor, Lipov Lada, Zavičaj, and the ethnic restaurant Pahuljica maintain tradition through authentic cuisine. Popular spots for young people include Marshal Pub, Pub Klopa i Pivo, and Pivnica Žirafa 23, while Ona Moja and Limun Žut lead the nightlife scene.
