Pantone, the global authority on color, has been announcing the color of the year for 20 years now. An exciting marketing move has quickly grown into the most anticipated event for many professionals. From designers (graphic, industrial, interior) through fashion (haute couture and ready-to-wear) to furniture, fabric, and paint makers, they all eagerly await for December to find out which color will be chosen.

How does the Pantone Color Institute choose the color of the year?
Twice a year, in secret meetings in one of the European capitals, Pantone brings together experts from the mentioned industries. They exchange ideas about trends in the past year – with thoughts on world politics, economy, media, and social networks, design, fashion - and try to "predict" the color that will symbolize mood and governing attitudes in the global culture for the upcoming year.

The color to start the new decade

At the beginning of a new decade that will undoubtedly bring tension and significant challenges, the Pantone Color Institute has announced that the color of the year is the Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue. This indigo shade is, at the same time, classic and comforting and evokes images of the sky at dusk, impeccably tailored suit, calm water surface or bowl full of ripe blueberries.

Classic blue is timeless and perfectly fits this moment in time. Besides, indigo can be obtained naturally from plants, which supports the Sustainable Development Initiative and thus builds on this year's Pantone color of the year, Living Coral.

"We live in a time that requires trust and faith. This is the kind of durability and confidence that the PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue expresses. The blue is reminiscent of the endless night sky and encourages us to look beyond, challenging us to think deeper, to widen our views and to communicate more freely. "

The meaning of Pantone blue colors

2000.
The first color chosen by the Pantone Color Institute as the color of the year is the PANTONE 15-4020 Cerulean Blue. It represented a sense of calm optimism before entering the new millennium.

2010.
The color of the year is the PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise. It combines calming blue and refreshing green. It inspires us to escape from everyday life through imagination about islands and tropical seas.

2016.
One of the two colors of the year is the PANTONE 15-3913 Serenity. For the first time in history, the jury selected a synergy of two colors.

The most famous Pantone blue shade

In 2001, Pantone standardized and named the most famous shade of blue in the world.
